The Invisible Roommate: The Hidden AI Already Shaping Your Child’s Development
A mother recently told me about her ten-year-old son. He loved watching science videos on a popular video-sharing platform. One day, he asked her a question that stopped her in her tracks.
“Mom, why does YouTube always show me the same kind of videos? I keep watching them, but I didn’t ask for them.”
She realized something important. Her son thought he was choosing what to watch. He had not realized that the system was also choosing for him—recommending, personalizing, and shaping what he encountered.
His experience is not unusual.
In our first blog, Why Modern Childhood Needs New Parenting Wisdom, we argued that parenting wisdom must evolve because childhood itself is changing. The issue is not simply that children now have access to more technology. The deeper change is that the environments in which children grow, learn, communicate, and form judgments are being transformed.
But there is a second concern that is even harder to see.
What if AI is influencing your child even when your child is not deliberately using an AI tool?
A child watches a recommended video, searches for information, plays a digital game, uses an educational platform, scrolls through a social-media feed, or receives a personalized suggestion. The child experiences these as ordinary digital activities. Yet behind many such experiences are systems that classify, predict, rank, recommend, personalize, filter, or generate what the child encounters.
AI is no longer simply something children use.
It is increasingly becoming part of the environment in which children develop.
That is why we call it the Invisible Roommate.
The AI Your Child May Not Recognize
When parents hear “AI and children,” they usually think of ChatGPT, an AI tutor, an image generator, or another application that a child consciously opens.
These are the visible forms of AI.
Much more AI, however, operates behind the interface.
Recommendation systems decide what may appear next. Personalization systems adapt digital experiences to patterns of behaviour. Search systems rank information. Educational platforms may adjust learning experiences. Generative AI increasingly produces text, images, audio, and other content.
The child may not know that AI is involved at all.
This is an important change in the developmental environment.
Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of human development established a foundational principle: children develop through continuing interaction with the multiple environments in which they live (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). The digital environment was not part of the world in which that theory was originally formulated, but the underlying principle remains highly relevant.
Today, the developmental environment includes not only the home, school, neighbourhood, and peer group.
It increasingly includes algorithmically mediated spaces.
Recent scholarship is beginning to recognize this shift. Xu and He (2026), in Growing Up with Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Child Development, examine children’s interaction with AI across three interconnected domains—interaction, perception, and learning. Their analysis is important precisely because it moves the discussion beyond the idea of AI as a simple technological tool and considers AI as a distinctive source of developmental experience.
Vygotsky’s theory of cognitive development reminds us that children learn through interaction with their environment and with more knowledgeable others (Vygotsky, 1978). Today, that environment increasingly includes AI systems that mediate what children encounter, how they learn, and what they come to understand.
The question for parents, therefore, is no longer simply:
“What AI tools is my child using?”
It is also:
“Where is AI already operating around my child?”
Key takeaway: AI is no longer just a tool children use. It is increasingly part of the environment in which children grow and learn.
Your Child Still Chooses—But the Environment Shapes the Choices
A child chooses a video.
But who decides what appears after it?
A child searches for information.
But who determines which results become most visible?
A child opens a platform.
But who determines what is recommended next?
Children certainly retain agency. We should not exaggerate the power of algorithms or suggest that automated systems control children’s behaviour. Parents, teachers, peers, culture, personality, prior experience, and children’s own decisions remain fundamental influences on development.
But the environment surrounding those choices has changed.
A 2024 study led by pediatrician and media researcher Jenny Radesky examined algorithmic recommendations on a video-sharing platform used by children. The researchers found that recommended content could contain attention-capturing and potentially problematic features, including violence, stereotypes, frightening themes, and other forms of sensational presentation. They concluded that the design of platforms and their underlying recommendation systems can shape children’s opportunities and risks. Importantly, the study did not establish that such exposure causes particular developmental outcomes (Radesky et al., 2024).
That distinction is essential.
The concern is not that an algorithm determines what a child will become.
The concern is that the algorithm increasingly participates in determining what the child encounters.
This is a subtle but important change in the conditions of childhood.
The child may think:
“I chose this.”
The more complete question is:
“What shaped the choices that were available to me?”
Key takeaway: Children still make choices, but AI systems increasingly shape the menu of options they see.
Who Decides What Becomes Visible?
Children construct knowledge partly through what they repeatedly encounter. They observe, compare, imitate, question, discuss, reject, and integrate experiences. Over time, these processes contribute to their understanding of people and the world.
AI-mediated systems can influence the information environment in which these processes occur.
They may repeatedly expose a child to particular interests. They may make some subjects more visible than others. They may personalize recommendations according to previous behaviour. They may prioritize content that is predicted to attract attention.
We should be careful not to turn this into a claim that algorithms inevitably shape children’s beliefs or identities. The evidence does not justify such a conclusion.
But the possibility that digital systems can structure children’s informational environments is no longer speculative.
This creates a new form of critical literacy.
A child needs to learn not only:
“What does this information say?”
but also:
“Why did I encounter this information?”
That distinction is becoming increasingly important in AI literacy research.
Atias and Mawasi’s (2025) systematic review of AI-literacy programmes for children and youth found that existing programmes tend to emphasize operational competencies, while sociocultural and critical dimensions of AI literacy remain underdeveloped.
Yim and Su (2025), reviewing AI literacy education specifically in primary schools, similarly identified competencies involving interaction with AI, computational thinking, critical data literacy, and AI ethics. Their review also highlights the relative infancy of evidence-based AI-literacy education for younger learners.
These findings have an important implication for parents.
Children should not learn only how to operate AI.
They should also learn how to question the systems operating around them.
Key takeaway: AI literacy is not just about using AI. It is about understanding why we see what we see.
The System Learns From Your Child
There is another important difference between traditional media and many contemporary digital environments.
The environment can learn from the child.
A book does not normally record which page a child read twice. A television programme does not continuously update its understanding of a child’s preferences. Many digital systems, however, can collect information about behaviour and use patterns to personalize subsequent experiences.
The process can become a repeating cycle:
Child’s behaviour → system learns patterns → system personalizes experience → child responds → system learns again.
The child is therefore not simply consuming an environment.
The environment is also responding to the child.
This raises questions about data, privacy, profiling, and agency.
UNICEF’s updated Guidance on AI and Children places children’s data and privacy alongside safety, fairness, transparency, accountability, development, and well-being. Its 2025 guidance emphasizes that AI systems affecting children should be designed around children’s rights and best interests (UNICEF, 2025).
The OECD’s 2025 assessment of children’s digital lives similarly emphasizes that children need to be both protected and empowered within increasingly digital environments, while recognizing that emerging technologies such as AI present both opportunities and risks (OECD, 2025).
For parents, the practical lesson is simple.
When a child says:
“The app knows what I like,”
parents can respond:
“It has learned patterns from what you do.”
That small change in language can help children begin to understand that personalization is not magic.
It is a consequence of data, prediction, and system design.
Key takeaway: Personalization is not magic. It is the result of systems learning from children’s behaviour.
AI Is Shaping Learning, Too
The developmental significance of AI becomes even clearer when we consider education.
AI can potentially provide individualized explanations, adaptive practice, feedback, translation, accessibility support, and new opportunities for exploration. These are genuine possibilities, particularly for children who have previously had limited access to individualized educational support.
But personalization should not automatically be equated with better development.
A system that helps a child explore a difficult idea may expand learning.
A system that supplies an answer before the child has struggled with the problem may instead reduce an opportunity for thinking.
A system that broadens exploration may support curiosity.
A system that continually predicts what a child will like may gradually narrow exploration.
The developmental question is therefore not simply:
“Is AI helping my child learn?”
It is:
“What kind of learning is AI helping my child experience?”
This distinction is consistent with the emerging research on AI literacy. Yim and Su (2025) found that primary-school AI literacy involves more than technical interaction; it includes critical data literacy, computational thinking, and ethics.
Xu and He (2026) likewise place AI within children’s interaction, perception, and learning rather than treating it as an isolated technological skill.
For parents, this means that AI literacy should begin to include a developmental question:
“Is AI expanding my child’s capacity to think, or gradually doing more of the thinking for the child?”
That question connects directly with the central concern established in our first blog.
Key takeaway: Personalization is not automatically better for learning. What matters is whether AI expands thinking or gradually replaces it.
The Parent’s AI Environment Audit
Parents cannot inspect every algorithm that their children encounter. Nor should parenting become an attempt to monitor every click.
A more useful approach is to understand the child’s digital environment well enough to ask better questions.
Parents can begin with eight:
1. What recommends content to my child?
2. What determines what appears next?
3. What is being personalized?
4. What information might the system be learning from my child’s behaviour?
5. Can my child explain why something was recommended?
6. Is AI expanding choices or narrowing them?
7. Is technology supporting learning or replacing part of the learning process?
8. What human experiences might be displaced by this digital activity?
These questions shift parenting from surveillance to developmental awareness.
The objective is not to inspect every digital action.
It is to help children understand the environment in which their actions take place.
From Using AI to Living With AI
This is the larger transition taking place.
The first generation of digital parenting asked:
“How much technology is my child using?”
The next asked:
“What is my child doing with technology?”
The AI era requires another question:
“How is technology shaping the environment in which my child makes choices?”
This is why the metaphor of the Invisible Roommate matters.
AI does not need to speak directly to a child to influence the child’s environment. It can operate through recommendation, personalization, ranking, prediction, filtering, and content generation.
The evidence is still developing. UNICEF itself notes that important gaps remain in understanding how AI affects children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development (UNICEF, 2025).
That caution is not a weakness in the argument.
It is precisely why parents need to become attentive now.
We should not wait until decades of evidence accumulate before asking reasonable developmental questions about technologies that are already entering children’s lives.
Parents cannot control every algorithm.
They cannot inspect every recommendation.
They cannot remove AI from the world in which their children will grow up.
But they can teach children to notice the systems around them.
They can ask why something was recommended. They can encourage children to explore beyond algorithmic suggestions. They can discuss what information systems may be using. They can teach children that personalization is not objectivity and that an AI-generated answer is not necessarily a verified truth.
Most importantly, they can help children understand that having a choice is not the same as choosing in an environment free from influence.
The Invisible Roommate Should Not Remain Invisible
The central parenting challenge of the AI era is therefore changing.
It is no longer sufficient to ask:
“What is my child doing with AI?”
We must also ask:
“What is AI doing around my child?”
This does not mean that AI should be feared or excluded from childhood.
AI can expand access to knowledge. It can support learning. It can improve accessibility. It can help children create and explore in ways that previous technologies could not.
The objective is not to remove AI from childhood.
It is to ensure that children can grow up with AI without surrendering their agency to it.
The emerging scholarship of Xu and He (2026), Radesky and colleagues (2024), Atias and Mawasi (2025), and Yim and Su (2025) is helping us understand different parts of this new landscape. International organizations such as UNICEF (2025) and the OECD (2025) are simultaneously emphasizing children’s rights, well-being, safety, privacy, empowerment, and participation in shaping AI’s future.
For parents, these developments point toward a new responsibility.
Children must learn not only to use AI.
They must learn to recognize AI’s presence, question its influence, understand its limitations, and retain agency within AI-shaped environments.
The invisible roommate is already in the room.
Our responsibility is to make sure that children know it is there.

This hits the core issue. We teach kids how to use AI tools, but not how to question why those tools put certain things in front of them. Why did I see this? is the question that turns users into thinkers. Without that, we’re just raising really skilled scrollers instead of critical citizens.

Parents need a much deeper understanding of how children interact with these tools so they can create an environment where conversations happen naturally and without hesitation.
