When AI Gets Too Close: The New Risks Parents Cannot Afford to Ignore

A mother recently discovered her 14-year-old daughter was confiding in an AI chatbot about her struggles at school. The daughter said the chatbot “understood” her better than anyone. It never judged her. It never got impatient. It was always available.

The mother wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or deeply concerned.

I understand her confusion. In our first blog, Why Modern Childhood Needs New Parenting Wisdom, we argued that parenting wisdom must evolve because childhood itself is changing. The challenge is not simply that children have access to more technology. The deeper change is that the environments in which children grow, learn, communicate, and form judgments are being transformed.

Our second blog, The Invisible Roommate, extended this argument. AI is no longer merely a tool that children consciously open and use. It is increasingly embedded in the digital environments surrounding them—recommending content, personalizing experiences, filtering information, and influencing what becomes visible.

But there is another boundary that parents now need to consider.

What happens when AI moves from shaping what children see and learn to becoming involved in how they feel, relate, and understand themselves?

This is a more intimate developmental question.

AI can converse with children, provide advice, simulate companionship, respond to emotional disclosures, and generate images that appear authentic. Some of these applications may offer genuine benefits. Others introduce risks that previous generations of parents never had to consider.

The issue is not whether AI is inherently good or bad.

The issue is how close AI should be allowed to come to a child’s emotional and social life.


When a Tool Starts to Feel Like a Companion

A calculator does not ask whether your child is lonely. A search engine does not ask how your child’s day went. A conversational AI can appear to do both—at least linguistically.

That difference matters.

AI companions are conversational systems designed to provide personalized, humanlike interaction. Their emergence is especially significant during adolescence, when relationships, belonging, identity, and social competence are developing rapidly.

Xiaoran Sun’s 2026 article in Child Development Perspectives is particularly important here. Rather than treating AI companions simply as another digital technology, Sun examines their potential influence on adolescent social relationships. The analysis identifies a genuine developmental tension: AI companions may provide opportunities for emotional expression, identity exploration, and social interaction, while also creating possibilities for displacement of human relationships, psychological dependence, and unrealistic expectations about relationships (Sun, 2026).

The attraction is easy to understand.

An AI companion is available almost whenever the child wants it. It responds immediately. It does not appear impatient. It does not embarrass the child. It can adapt its responses to the conversation and create an impression of being attentive.

For a lonely, socially hesitant, or emotionally distressed young person, this can be powerful.

There may be legitimate benefits. AI can help a young person rehearse a difficult conversation, explore an idea, or put feelings into words before discussing them with another person.

But parents should recognize an essential distinction:

A responsive system is not the same thing as a human relationship.

Human relationships involve reciprocity. People misunderstand one another, disagree, establish boundaries, disappoint each other, apologize, negotiate, and repair relationships. These experiences can be uncomfortable, but they are also part of learning how to live with others.

AI can simulate responsiveness without participating in a genuinely reciprocal human relationship.

That distinction becomes important when a child begins turning to AI instead of people.

When AI Becomes the Place a Child Takes Problems

The boundary becomes even more sensitive when children use generative AI for emotional or mental-health advice.

Young people already seek information and support online when they feel anxious, angry, sad, confused, or overwhelmed. Generative AI makes this form of help-seeking unusually easy: a child can ask a question privately, at any time, and receive an immediate conversational response.

We now have empirical evidence that this is happening.

McBain and colleagues (2025), in a nationally representative survey published in JAMA Network Open, found that 13.1% of U.S. youths aged 12–21 reported using generative AI for mental-health advice, defined in the study as seeking advice or help when feeling sad, angry, or nervous. Among those users, 65.5% reported seeking such advice monthly or more often, and 92.7% considered the advice somewhat or very helpful (McBain et al., 2025).

These findings deserve attention, but they also require careful interpretation.

The study does not establish that AI improves mental health. It does not establish that AI causes psychological harm. It is a cross-sectional survey and did not examine the quality of the advice received or subsequent mental-health outcomes. The authors themselves call for further research, particularly among young people with mental-health conditions.

Nevertheless, the finding changes the parenting conversation.

A child may ask:

“Why am I feeling this way?”

The system may provide a plausible explanation.

But a plausible explanation is not necessarily an accurate assessment.

A child may ask:

“What should I do about my anxiety?”

The system may offer suggestions.

But suggestions are not equivalent to professional assessment, diagnosis, or treatment.

The emerging evidence therefore suggests a sensible boundary for parents:

AI may be a place to begin reflection. It should not automatically become the place where the conversation ends.

This is not an argument against every use of AI for emotional reflection. It is an argument for distinguishing between low-stakes reflection and situations in which human judgment, care, and responsibility are required.

Key takeaway: AI may help a child begin reflecting on feelings, but it should not replace trusted adults or professionals.


The Risk of Emotional Substitution

The most important concern may not be that an AI system gives one incorrect answer.

It may be that a child gradually begins to prefer artificial interaction to the difficulty of human relationships.

We should not present this as an established universal outcome. Research on AI companions is too new for that conclusion.

But it is an important developmental possibility.

Sun’s analysis is valuable precisely because it does not assume a simple positive-or-negative relationship. AI companions may support adolescents’ social development in some circumstances while displacing human interaction in others. The effects may also operate in both directions: young people’s existing social experiences may influence why they turn toward AI companions, while their experiences with AI may subsequently influence their human relationships (Sun, 2026).

Sherry Turkle, a pioneering researcher on technology and human relationships, has explored this terrain for decades. In her seminal book Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other, Turkle (2011) warned about the emotional attachments that children form in response to machines’ simulated signs of caring and love. She argues that when children interact with systems designed to simulate emotion, they may begin to expect relationships to be frictionless—always available, never demanding, never disappointing.

In Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, Turkle (2015) extends this argument. She emphasizes that machines do not teach children to trust others enough to risk open conversations with them. Attachment and trust take root through “human attention, presence, and conversation”.

This gives parents a better question than simply asking how often a child talks to AI.

Ask:

“What role is AI beginning to play in my child’s emotional life?”

If AI helps a child rehearse a difficult conversation, that may be constructive.

If it helps a child organize thoughts before speaking to a parent, teacher, or friend, it may be useful.

But if AI becomes the child’s preferred source of reassurance, validation, emotional disclosure, or companionship, parents should pay closer attention.

The issue is not simply whether an AI relationship exists.

The issue is what human experience that relationship may be replacing.

Key takeaway: If AI becomes a child’s primary source of emotional support, it may be displacing the human relationships they need to develop.


When AI Becomes a Source of Advice

There is another reason parents need to remain involved.

AI systems can produce fluent, confident, and personalized responses. For a child, fluency can easily be mistaken for authority.

This is particularly consequential when the subject is emotional well-being.

McBain and colleagues found that most young users in their survey considered AI-generated mental-health advice helpful. That perception is important because it shows why young people may continue returning to AI for support. At the same time, the researchers point to difficulties in evaluating AI-generated mental-health advice and concerns about transparency, particularly when systems are used by people with intensive clinical needs (McBain et al., 2025).

The problem is therefore not simply that AI can be wrong.

Parents should help children understand something more fundamental:

An AI system can sound certain without actually knowing what is true.

It does not automatically know the child’s history, family circumstances, relationships, developmental stage, or the context behind a brief question.

The ability to produce a convincing answer should never be confused with the ability to take responsibility for the consequences of that answer.

This is one reason UNICEF’s updated Guidance on AI and Children places particular emphasis on transparency, accountability, human oversight, children’s best interests, development, and well-being (UNICEF, 2025).

For parents, the practical principle is straightforward:

The more consequential the decision, the more important human judgment becomes.

Key takeaway: Fluency is not the same as accuracy. Children need to understand that AI can sound confident while being wrong.


When a Child’s Image Can Be Used Without Consent

A different but equally serious risk concerns children’s images.

Generative AI can manipulate photographs and create highly realistic synthetic images. For children and adolescents, this creates new possibilities for impersonation, humiliation, bullying, sexualized imagery, and other forms of technology-facilitated abuse.

This is no longer merely a speculative concern.

Kamil Kopecký and Dominik Voráč’s review in AI & SOCIETY examines the emergence of so-called deep nudes—realistic nude images generated from photographs without the person’s consent. Their analysis specifically identifies the risks such technologies pose to children and adults (Kopecký & Voráč, 2025).

Even more recent empirical research indicates that adolescents are already encountering this technology.

A 2026 study by Chad M. S. Steel, published in PLOS ONE, examined the prevalence of generative-AI sexualized image creation and distribution among U.S. adolescents. The study found substantial engagement with such practices, including both consensual and non-consensual creation and distribution, and concluded that the normalization of this behaviour and the associated victimization require educational and policy responses (Steel, 2026).

This changes an old parenting assumption.

Parents have traditionally told children:

“Do not send inappropriate photographs of yourself.”

That advice remains important.

But children now need to understand something previous generations never had to consider:

A harmful image does not have to be real to cause real harm.

An ordinary photograph can potentially be transformed into something the child never created, never intended, and never consented to.

The consequences may extend far beyond the image itself. They can include humiliation, bullying, coercion, reputational damage, fear, and loss of control over one’s identity.

UNICEF’s 2025 guidance explicitly recognizes AI-generated child sexual abuse material and non-consensual intimate images as emerging child-rights concerns requiring stronger safeguards (UNICEF, 2025).

Children therefore need a new dimension of digital literacy:

image integrity, consent, privacy, and synthetic-media awareness.

In an AI environment, a child’s photograph is not merely a photograph.

It can also become raw material for something the child never intended to create.

Key takeaway: A child’s image can be manipulated by AI without their consent. Children need to understand that once an image is digital, it can become something they never intended.


The Screen-Time Problem Has Not Disappeared

The emergence of AI does not make earlier concerns about children’s digital lives irrelevant.

It makes them more complicated.

For years, parents have been encouraged to count screen minutes. Yet contemporary research increasingly demonstrates that duration alone does not adequately describe children’s digital experiences.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in JAMA Pediatrics examined screen-use contexts and developmental outcomes in children younger than six. The researchers found different associations depending on the type and context of screen use, including program viewing, age-inappropriate content, caregiver screen use during routines, and co-use. They concluded that future research should examine the specific elements of screen-use contexts rather than treating all screen exposure as equivalent (Mallawaarachchi et al., 2024).

The lesson for AI is important.

The relevant question is not only:

“How long has my child been online?”

It is also:

“What is keeping my child there?”

Is the child learning, creating, communicating, exploring, playing, or solving a problem?

Or is the child caught in a cycle of novelty, personalization, emotional stimulation, and continued engagement?

These experiences are not equivalent.

The objective should therefore not be to make childhood technology-free.

It should be to make children’s digital lives developmentally purposeful.

That means protecting sleep, physical activity, family interaction, reading, face-to-face relationships, creative activity, outdoor experience, and unstructured play from being gradually displaced by digital engagement.

The question is not simply whether a screen is present.

The question is what the screen is replacing.

Key takeaway: Screen time matters, but what matters more is what the screen is replacing. Protect sleep, play, family time, and face-to-face relationships.


Four Boundaries Parents Should Establish

Parents do not need to understand every AI system their children encounter. They need a small number of developmentally meaningful boundaries.

1. AI can assist—but not replace—human relationships.

Children need opportunities to experience friendship, disagreement, cooperation, empathy, conflict, reconciliation, and responsibility with real people.

These experiences cannot simply be outsourced to a system designed to respond whenever the user wants it to.

2. AI can support reflection—but should not become the child’s only emotional support.

Children should know that they can use AI to organize thoughts or explore questions while also understanding when a trusted adult needs to be involved.

Serious, persistent, or potentially dangerous emotional difficulties require human attention.

3. A child’s image is part of personal identity.

Children need to understand that consent and privacy do not end when an image becomes digital.

They should also understand that AI can alter images in ways that are difficult to anticipate or control.

4. Technology should not crowd out development.

Children need sleep, movement, family interaction, social experience, creative activity, and periods of unstructured exploration.

Digital engagement should therefore be judged partly by what it contributes to development and partly by what it displaces.

These boundaries do not make parents anti-technology.

They make them developmentally intentional.


The Question Parents Need to Ask Now

The first blog asked whether children are still doing the thinking when they use AI.

The second asked whether AI is shaping the environment in which children make choices.

This third blog brings the question closer to the child’s emotional and social life:

What role is AI beginning to play in my child’s life?

Is it a tool?

A tutor?

A creative partner?

A source of information?

A conversational aid?

Or is it gradually becoming a companion, adviser, emotional outlet, or substitute for human interaction?

The answer may change as the child develops.

That is why parents need conversations rather than one-time rules.

Ask your child what they use AI for.

Ask whether they ever talk to it when they are upset.

Ask whether they have ever trusted an AI answer without checking it.

Ask whether they know that AI can sound confident while being wrong.

Ask what they would do if someone created a false image of them.

Most importantly, make it safe for children to tell you about uncomfortable experiences.

A child who expects punishment may hide an AI-related problem.

A child who expects to be heard is more likely to seek help.


A New Parenting Boundary

The challenge of AI parenting is no longer only about what children should be allowed to do with technology.

It is increasingly about what technology should be allowed to become in a child’s life.

AI may help a child learn without becoming the child’s teacher.

It may support a conversation without becoming the child’s companion.

It may provide information without becoming the child’s authority.

It may help a child reflect on emotions without becoming the child’s therapist.

It may help create an image without becoming a weapon against another child’s dignity.

The distinction is not between technology and no technology.

It is between technology that expands human capability and technology that begins to substitute for human development.

That is the boundary parents need to watch.

The purpose of parenting in the AI era is not to keep children away from every emerging technology.

It is to ensure that children continue to develop the human capacities that technology cannot safely replace: relationship, judgment, empathy, self-regulation, resilience, responsibility, and agency.

AI can come close.

But it should never become so close that a child begins to confuse artificial responsiveness with human relationship.
