A father recently told me about his ten-year-old daughter. She had a history project due. She opened ChatGPT, typed in the question, copied the answer, and closed her laptop. Twenty seconds. Done.
The father was not sure whether to be impressed or deeply worried.
I understand his confusion. Parents have always faced the same core question: how do we raise capable, responsible, independent adults? Much of the wisdom we inherited still holds. Children still need secure relationships, affection, clear boundaries, meaningful challenges, and gradually increasing independence.
But what has changed is the environment where that wisdom must work.
Digital technologies are now embedded in learning, play, and social life. AI can explain, write, solve, and converse—tasks that once required a child to struggle through on their own. The issue is not that old wisdom is useless. It is that the conditions have shifted dramatically.
From Screen Time to Developmental Time
For years, screen time was our main metric. Parents asked: “How many hours?” Teachers asked: “How much exposure?” It still matters. But it is no longer enough.

AI can now simulate conversation and encouragement. Children may begin to use it not just as a tool but as a social presence.
Emerging scholarship on AI companions and adolescents points to both potential benefits and concerns around empathy, conflict, and boundaries. Evidence is still early. Claims of inevitable harm are premature.
But the distinction parents can teach is simple:
- AI can help your child rehearse a difficult conversation.
- AI does not replace relationships that involve reciprocity, disagreement, responsibility, and repair.
A system that sounds caring is not the same as a human who cares.
