📑 In This Chapter
7.1 Urdu Glossary of Key Terms — BUNYAAD
- Respect, dignity, psychological safety. Being valued, safe to make mistakes without humiliation.
- Example: “Thank you for trying, who can add? Let us listen to her idea first.”
- Opposite: Sarcasm, labeling, public shaming, comparison.
- Color: Deep Blue 🔵
- Empathy, compassion, perspective-taking. Noticing feelings in self and others, responding with care — not pity.
- Critical Distinction: Bechara (pity) vs. Ehsas (empathy).
- Example: “What I hear you saying is… Is that right? I see you finding difficult — how can we help?”
- Color: Heart Green 💚
- Inquiry, reflection, wondering, critical thinking, metacognition. From Arabic f-k-r — “Afala tatafakkaroon” (Do you not reflect?)
- Example: “What makes you think that? My thinking is… because… What does it make you wonder?”
- Color: Light Green 🟢
- Self-regulation, emotional balance, self-management. Holding emotions, choosing a response. Linked to sabr (patience).
- Not: Suppression. “It is okay to feel angry, and we can choose what to do.”
- Example: “Let us pause and breathe. I feel… I need… I will… Emotion thermometer 1–5.”
- Color: Orange 🟠
- Collaboration, collective responsibility, teamwork, unity. From Arabic w-h-d — Pakistan’s motto: “Ittihad, Iman, Tanzim.”
- Structured collaboration: Positive interdependence, individual accountability, rotating roles.
- Example: “We need your idea too. Reporter shares partner idea (not own).”
- Color: Maroon 🔴
- ❌ Bechara (Pity): “Poor thing, bechara, he cannot.” — From above, lowers expectations, creates deficit, taras.
- ✅ Ehsas (Empathy): “I see you finding difficult — that makes sense. How can we help? What I hear you saying is…” — From alongside, preserves Izzat (dignity), helps.
- Teach this distinction explicitly — to children and parents.

7.5 Parent Engagement Templates — BUNYAAD Same Language
Dear Families, Assalamu Alaikum,
We’re excited to implement the BUNYAAD Framework this year — Building Foundation for Learning and Well-Being. BUNYAAD means foundation — Izzat (respect), Ehsas (empathy — independent pillar, not pity), Tafakkur (inquiry), Qaboo (self-regulation), Ittihad (collaboration). These are values you already teach at home — adab, rahma, tafakkur, sabr, ta’awun — now with the same language at school and home.
Tier 1 is zero-cost. No extra subject, no extra period. Just 5 minutes of conversation at dinner using the same stems: “Thank you for trying,” “What I hear you saying is… Is that right?,” “What makes you think?,” “Let us pause and breathe,” “We need your idea too.” And avoid bechara — use Ehsas.
We invite you to join our monthly Parent Circle (30 min) — share wins and challenges. Together, same team, same values. Foundation over decoration.
Try: Greeting by name, Echo Listening. Ask: “Who showed good listening today?”
Try: Dinner feeling check-in, avoid bechara. Ask: “How do you think she felt? Why?”
Try: Wonder Wall on fridge. Ask: “What are you curious about for tomorrow?”
Try: Breathing before homework, thermometer. Ask: “Which calming strategy works best?”
Try: Family roles rotating, Peace Table. Ask: “How did we work as a team?”
You’re invited! Come see BUNYAAD in action at our classroom. Your child will share 30 seconds on how they practiced Izzat or Ehsas this week — equitable including girls and quiet learners, not only confident English speakers.
What you’ll see: Greeting at entry, feeling check-in (30 sec), See-Think-Wonder, belly breathing, clock partners/roles, Respect Chain, Kindness Jar, Wonder Wall.
Date/Time: ______ Place: ______
📄 Home Strategy Sheet — Qaboo & Ehsas at Home
- Balloon Breathing: Pretend to blow up a balloon — inhale nose, exhale mouth (4 counts).
- Counting Colors: Find 5 blue things in the room — distraction and grounding.
- Hug Time: 20-second hug (oxytocin release) — ask permission.
- Cool Water: Splash face or drink cold water when thermometer is 4–5.
- What I Hear…: Practice empathic listening before fixing. 2 minutes of listening and reflecting.
- Avoid Bechara: Replace “Poor thing” with “He is finding it difficult — how can we help?”
- I Feel…: Use “I feel frustrated when… because…” instead of blame.
- Pause and Choose: “I feel… I need… I will…” — Example: “I feel angry. I need to pause. I will take a breath and calm space for 2 minutes.”
🤝 Parent-Teacher Partnership Pledge
We agree to use the same BUNYAAD language at home and school:
✅ All resources are zero-cost — draw on the board, use paper, or just speak.
✅ Ehsas is an independent pillar — protect the Bechara vs Ehsas distinction.
✅ These are tools for growth — never for grading or ranking children.
