Chapter 6
Assessment & Growth
— Not Grading Pillars — Measuring Conditions, Not Children
This chapter explains how to know BUNYAAD is working — without grading, ranking, or scoring children. We measure conditions and practices, not children’s empathy or respect.
❌ No marks for Izzat, Ehsas, Tafakkur, Qaboo, Ittihad.
❌ No child is “high empathy” or “low empathy.”
✅ Measure conditions: “Does the classroom have a greeting? A feeling check-in? Roles?”
✅ Measure practices: “Did we use wait time today? Did we avoid bechara?”
📑 In This Chapter
6.1 Authentic Assessment — Conditions Not Child Ranking
🧠 Why We Never Grade Pillars
- Grading empathy and respect creates compliance, faking, and fear — the opposite of Izzat.
- A child who is introverted may show Ehsas quietly — grading would penalize their temperament.
- Children are not products to be scored. They are human beings in the process of growing.
🛡️ Assessment Guardrails
- ❌ No marks for Izzat, Ehsas, Tafakkur, Qaboo, Ittihad.
- ❌ No lengthy Western SEL surveys translated without cultural adaptation.
- ❌ Do not measure only toppers or confident English speakers. Measure quiet children, girls in back rows, first-generation learners.
- ❌ Do not collect data that is not used. If it goes into a file and is never discussed, it is a burden without benefit.
- ✅ Measure conditions and practices, not children.
👀 Observation Focus Areas
🔵 Izzat
- Eye contact when speaking/listening
- Use of names, inclusive language
- Greeting by name at entry
- Equity sticks used consistently
- Mistakes treated as information
💚 Ehsas
- Eye contact when someone is speaking
- No bechara — “He finding difficult” replaces “Poor thing”
- Use of feeling words beyond happy/sad
- Use of “What I hear you saying is…”
- Perspective-taking: “How do you think she felt? Why?”
🟢 Tafakkur
- Question complexity (how/why vs. what)
- Use of evidence: “My thinking is… because…”
- Curiosity displayed — See-Think-Wonder
- Wait time (3 sec) used consistently
- Wonder Wall has genuine questions
🟠 Qaboo
- Emotion recognition — “Thermometer 1–5” used
- Strategy use — “I feel… I need… I will…”
- Recovery time after upset
- Calm space used as time-in, not punishment
- Breathing practiced daily
🔴 Ittihad
- Role fulfillment — every child gets leadership
- Idea integration — final products show multiple perspectives
- Conflict resolution — Peace Table used with I Feel statements
- Reporter shares partner idea (not own) — forces listening
- Everyone gets a turn to speak
📓 Anecdotal Recording System
- Tool: Small notebook, sticky notes, or phone notes.
- Frequency: 3–5 brief notes per day.
- Focus: Specific skill demonstrations — not general praise.
- Example: “10:15 AM — Zain used I Feel statement when Sam took his book. Sam apologized with an action — helped organize Zain’s desk.”
- Organization: Color-code by pillar or use separate sections.
📁 Student Portfolio System
- Contents: “My Best Questions” collection, “Times I Used Qaboo” reflections, group work samples, role descriptions, self-assessment checklists, goal-setting sheets, “I showed Izzat when…” entries.
- Review Schedule: Weekly — student adds one item. Monthly — student selects best of the month. Termly — student-led portfolio conference. Annually — cumulative growth review.
📊 Tiered Measurement
Tier 1 5-Minute Walk
Monthly — Yes/No — Not Yet/Starting/Strong
- Greeting by name? Thank you for trying? No sarcasm?
- Feeling noticed? What I hear…? Feeling words?
- What makes you think? Wait 3 sec? Wonder Wall?
- Breathing? Thermometer? Calm space (time-in)?
- Clock partners? Roles? Reporter shares partner idea?
- Cost: $0 — Self-assessment version: teacher 1 min weekly.
Tier 2 Reflection & Voice
- Teacher Reflection (2 min/week): Tried… Noticed… Felt… Over 10 weeks, story emerges.
- Student Voice (2 min/week, Grades 3+): Anonymous: “How safe do you feel to make a mistake?” Fingers 1–5. “How much do teachers listen?”
- Parent Voice (optional): Oral: “Do you feel your child is respected? Do you notice Ehsas at home?”
- Reporting: Aggregate anonymized — percentage of classrooms observed using greeting, wait time, breathing, etc. Not percentage of children with “high empathy.”
Tier 3 School Self-Assessment
- Monthly (10 min): Head + teachers together review 5 pillars at 3 levels (Not Yet / Starting / Strong). Choose one pillar to deepen next month.
- Not reported to district for ranking. Used for school improvement.
- External evaluation: CLASS or Stallings adapted to BUNYAAD pillars — supportive purpose. Never child SEL scores in high-stakes contexts.
6.2 Progress Tracking Templates — Home and School
🏫 Classroom Climate Survey (Student Version — Picture-Based)
Administer: Beginning, middle, end of term.
📋 Teacher Weekly Quick-Check
🔵 Izzat — Tally: Who spoke today? Dots in register corner. If same 5 children daily, equity issue becomes visible.
💚 Ehsas — Notes: Who used feeling words? Offered help? Avoided bechara?
🟢 Tafakkur — Notes: Genuine questions asked. Use of “My thinking is… because…”
🟠 Qaboo — Notes: Thermometer use. “I feel… I need… I will…” observed.
🔴 Ittihad — Notes: Reporter shared partner idea. Conflict resolution observed.

🤝 Combined Parent-Teacher Tracker
| Week | Pillar Focus | School: Tried… Noticed… Next… | Home: Tried… Noticed… Next… |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🔵 Izzat | Teacher notes… | Parent notes… |
| 2 | 💚 Ehsas | Teacher notes… | Parent notes… |
| 3 | 🟢 Tafakkur | Teacher notes… | Parent notes… |
Child Reflection (optional, not marked): “This week I showed Izzat when… Ehsas when…” — Draw or write. Not graded.
6.3 Rubrics for Each Pillar — For Reflection, Not Ranking
These rubrics are for your reflection — to help you notice growth in conditions and practices. Never use them to rank or grade children.
🔵 Izzat — Respectful Relations
- Sarcasm, labeling, comparison, public shaming present.
- Mistakes are mocked.
- Same children dominate.
- Greeting is rare.
- Teacher sometimes uses “Thank you for trying.”
- Sometimes greeting.
- Equity sticks sometimes.
- Mistakes sometimes treated as information.
- Children sometimes listen to each other.
- Greeting consistent — by name, eye contact, salaam.
- Mistakes are information.
- Equity sticks ensure back rows and girls are called.
- Children thank each other for trying.
- Safe to make mistakes. Inclusive.
💚 Ehsas — Empathy (Independent) — Never Graded
- Bechara/pity language: “Poor thing, he cannot.”
- Feelings ignored.
- No feeling words beyond happy/sad.
- Interrupting.
- No perspective-taking.
- Conflict blaming.
- Teacher sometimes notices feelings: “I see some tired faces.”
- Sometimes uses “What I hear you saying…”
- Feeling check-in sometimes (30 sec thumb face).
- Children sometimes use feeling words.
- Perspective question sometimes: “How do you think she felt?”
- Daily feeling check-in (30 sec, no forced explanation).
- “What I hear you saying is… Is that right?” used by teacher and children.
- Avoids bechara — uses Ehsas: “He finding difficult — how can we help?”
- Perspective-taking with existing stories: “How felt? Why?” regularly.
- Children notice feelings in others and offer help without prompting.
- Conflict: “How did you feel? How do you think he felt?” before “What happened?”
- Empathy is an equity driver — girls and quiet children included.
🟢 Tafakkur — Inquiring Mind
- Only recall “what” questions.
- No wait time.
- No Wonder Wall.
- Questions silenced: “Silly question.”
- See-Think-Wonder sometimes.
- Wait time sometimes.
- Wonder Wall has some questions.
- Celebrates some questions.
- “What makes you think?” sometimes.
- Wait time (3 sec) consistent after question and after answer.
- See-Think-Wonder (1 min) regular.
- Wonder Wall with children’s genuine questions (including spelling mistakes) displayed — not only toppers.
- Children ask “how” and “why” questions, build on each other, complexity over time.
- “My thinking is… because…” used consistently.
- Reflection: “What was my thinking?”
🟠 Qaboo — Regulated Self
- No regulation routines.
- Calm space used as punishment — send “naughty” child.
- Suppression: “Don’t feel angry.”
- Breathing sometimes.
- Thermometer visible.
- Calm space sometimes as time-in (not punishment).
- Teacher sometimes models Qaboo: “I am frustrated, I will breathe.”
- Children sometimes use “I feel… I need…”
- Daily breathing (1 min) collective.
- Thermometer 1–5 visible — children use intensity language: “Where is your thermometer? 4? Would you like breath or calm space?”
- Calm space (corner/floor, 2-min timer, return when ready) — time-in support, never punishment, never for misbehavior isolation.
- Teacher models Qaboo first.
- Children pause and choose: “I feel… I need… I will…” before adult intervention.
- Children suggest strategies to peers — recovery time reduced.
🔴 Ittihad — Collaborative Action
- Group work unstructured — same children dominate.
- Confident boys dominate, girls are scribes.
- No roles, no accountability.
- Clock partners sometimes.
- Roles sometimes (Facilitator, Time Keeper, Materials Manager, Reporter, Checker).
- Turn and Talk sometimes.
- Reporter shares partner idea sometimes.
- Group reflection sometimes.
- Clock partners with 12 different peers — quick pairing, no exclusion, no best-friends-only.
- Roles rotate daily — every child (including girls and quiet learners) gets leadership.
- Turn and Talk accountability — Reporter shares partner idea (not own) — forces listening (Ehsas), equity (quiet child’s idea shared).
- Positive interdependence: “We need each other.” Individual accountability: each role. Promotive interaction: face to face. Social skills: Izzat + Ehsas while collaborating. Group processing: “How did we work together? Did everyone get a turn? What better tomorrow?”
- Conflict resolution: Peace Table with I Feel statements, solution focus, Apology of Action (fix, not just words).
- Leadership rotates naturally — final products show integration of multiple ideas.
6.4 Growth Conference Guide — Student-Led with Parent and Teacher
Same language, home and school. This conference is not about marks. It is about the child reflecting on their own growth in the five pillars.
📋 Preparation — One Week Before
- Student selects portfolio pieces: “My Best Questions,” “Times I Used Qaboo,” group work role descriptions, “I showed Izzat when… Ehsas when…”
- Student completes self-reflection sheet.
- Student practices sharing with a peer: “What I hear you saying is…”
📅 Conference Structure — 20 Minutes (Student-Led)
💡 Example Student Reflection
“I showed Izzat when I listened to my friend without interrupting. I showed Ehsas when I noticed my sister was sad and said ‘What I hear you saying is…’ I showed Tafakkur when I asked ‘Why do plants need sun?’ on the Wonder Wall. I showed Qaboo when I used the calm space instead of shouting. I showed Ittihad when I shared my partner’s idea as the Reporter.”
❌ No ranking. No grading. No marks for pillars.
✅ Focus on conditions, practices, and the child’s own story of growth.
📢 “Progress, not perfection.”
