Chapter 1

Foundations of BUNYAAD

1.1 What is the BUNYAAD Framework?

BUNYAAD (Urdu for Foundation — بنیاد) represents the foundation that holds all learning and well-being. Like the foundation of a house, if it is strong, the roof stands. If it is weak, the roof falls — even if it is decorated.

BUNYAAD provides a practical, culturally-rooted plan to embed essential competencies into existing school life without an extra subject, extra period, or extra budget for Tier 1.

🔑 Key Principles

  • Same Content, Different Process: Same Urdu, Maths, Science, Islamiat textbook — taught with BUNYAAD language and routines.
  • Zero-Cost Core (Tier 1): Requires $0. No materials. Works with a blackboard and a 60-child class.
  • Culture as Bridge: Words like Izzat, Ehsas, Tafakkur, Qaboo, Ittihad already exist in homes. Parents recognize these as adab, rahma, tafakkur, sabr, ta’awun — not foreign jargon.
  • Hidden Curriculum Matters Most: Language, routines, turn-taking, and error-handling leave marks that last a lifetime.
  • Depth over Breadth: One pillar strong for 2 weeks is success — not five pillars poorly done.

1.2 The Five Pillars — With Ehsas as an Independent Pillar

Why Five, Not Four? Global frameworks — CASEL 2023, OECD SSES 2024, UNESCO MGIEP 2022 — treat empathy as an independent competency, not part of respect. Research shows empathy reduces bullying by 35%. Therefore, BUNYAAD has Ehsas as an independent pillar.

Pillar 1: Izzat (عزت) — Respect, Dignity, Psychological Safety

  • Core: Every child feels safe to participate, ask questions, and make mistakes without fear of humiliation, sarcasm, or punishment.
  • Based on: Edmondson (2019) psychological safety.
  • Color: Deep Blue · Symbol: Open door greeting.

Pillar 2: Ehsas (احساس) — Empathy, Compassion, Perspective-Taking (INDEPENDENT)

  • Core: Notice feelings in self and others, take perspective, respond with care that preserves dignity — not pity.
  • Critical Distinction — Bechara vs Ehsas: “Bechara, poor thing” (pity from above, creates deficit) vs. “I see you are finding this difficult. That makes sense. How can we help?” (empathy from alongside, preserves Izzat).
  • Color: Heart Green · Symbol: Two hearts listening.

Pillar 3: Tafakkur (تفکر) — The Inquiring Mind

  • Core: Habit of wondering, asking genuine questions, reflecting on own thinking.
  • Quranic root: “Afala tatafakkaroon” (Do you not reflect?).
  • Effect Size: Metacognitive strategies 0.60 (Hattie 2023).
  • Color: Light Green · Symbol: Light bulb with question mark.

Pillar 4: Qaboo (قابو) — The Regulated Self

  • Core: Notice emotions, pause, choose a response — not react impulsively. Linked to sabr (patience).
  • Not: Suppression (“Don’t feel angry”). Rather: “It is okay to feel angry, and you can learn to hold it and choose what to do.”
  • Color: Orange · Symbol: Breathing cloud.

Pillar 5: Ittihad (اتحاد) — Collaborative Action

  • Core: Work equitably with others toward a shared goal with positive interdependence, individual accountability, and appreciation of diverse strengths.
  • Not: Simply putting children in groups. Unstructured group work increases inequity. BUNYAAD requires structured collaboration.
  • Effect Size: Cooperative learning 0.40–0.58 (Johnson & Johnson 2023).
  • Color: Maroon · Symbol: Interlocking hands.

1.3 Our Theory of Change

Simple Logic: IF we invest in teachers and parents consistently modeling the 5 pillars through daily micro-practices, AND use the same language at home and school, THEN students repeatedly practice and internalize these competencies, LEADING TO a culture of Izzat, Ehsas, curiosity, regulation, and teamwork.

📥 Inputs

  • Teacher micro-practices
  • Head teacher trust
  • Zero materials
  • Parent partnership

⚙️ Activities

  • Daily 1–2 min routines
  • BUNYAAD language stems
  • Reflective circles
  • Same stems at home

📈 Short-Term Outcomes → 🌍 Long-Term Impact

Increased participation (girls/quiet) · Improved regulation · Enhanced collaboration · Reduced fear → Confident articulate citizens · Academically strong · Future leaders with adab, rahma, tafakkur, sabr, ta’awun

1.4 Alignment with Educational Goals

🇵🇰 SNC Pakistan 2020 🇮🇳 NEP India 2020 🌐 CASEL 2023 🌐 OECD SSES 2024 🌐 UNESCO MGIEP 🌐 SDG 4

BUNYAAD maps directly to CASEL’s 5 competencies, OECD SSES constructs, and UNESCO’s emphasis on empathy and global citizenship — while being fully rooted in Pakistan’s SNC and regional NEP frameworks.

📢 Bilingual Reporting: Urdu for parents/community (“Hum Izzat, Ehsas, Tafakkur, Qaboo, Ittihad sikha rahe hain.”) · English for officials/donors (“We teach psychological safety, empathy (independent), inquiry, self-regulation, and collaboration — zero-cost core embedded in existing subjects.”)
Chapter 2

Your Role as Parent and Teacher — Same Team

2.1 The Power of Modeling — Home and School

Children learn more from what we do than from what we say. If a teacher says Izzat but shames a child, children learn shaming. If a parent says Ehsas but uses bechara (pity), children learn pity — not empathy.

🧱 Three Core Modeling Responsibilities

  • 1. Consistent Language Use: Same stems at home and school.
  • 2. Visible Skill Demonstration: Show how you pause, listen, and wonder.
  • 3. Authentic Response: Be genuine, not performative.

2.2 Essential Language Shifts — For Home and School

❌ Old Language (Avoid)✅ New BUNYAAD Language (Use)
“Galat!” / “You are slow.”“Thank you for trying. What made you think that? Who can add?” (Izzat + Tafakkur)
“Bechara, poor thing, he cannot.”“He is finding it difficult. That makes sense. How can we help?” / “What I hear you saying is…” (Ehsas with Izzat)
“Why are you asking silly questions?”“That is an interesting question. What makes you wonder? My thinking is… because…” (Tafakkur)
“Stop crying, be strong.”“It is okay to feel sad. Would you like to breathe together or visit the calm space? I feel… I need… I will…” (Qaboo + Ehsas)
“Do group work.” (unstructured)“Your turn, my turn. Reporter will share the partner’s idea. We need your idea too.” (Ittihad + Izzat + Ehsas)

2.3 Emotion Coaching Framework

1. Recognize & Name

Ehsas + Qaboo

Urdu: میں محسوس کر سکتا ہوں کہ آپ udaas/gusse میں ہیں۔

English: “I can see you are feeling sad/angry. Where is your thermometer 1–5?”

2. Validate & Understand

Izzat + Ehsas — Not Pity

English: “It makes sense to feel this way. Not ‘poor thing’ — I hear you finding it difficult.”

3. Support & Problem-Solve

Qaboo + Tafakkur + Ittihad

English: “When this feeling comes, what can we do? Let us think — breath, calm space, ask for help? I feel… I need… I will…”

Chapter 3

Pillar Implementation Guides

3.1 Izzat (عزت) — Respect, Dignity, Psychological Safety

🎯 Goals

  • Every child feels safe to participate, ask questions, and make mistakes without fear of humiliation.
  • Build equitable participation — back rows, girls, quiet learners all get turns.

🏫 Core Routines — Classroom (Zero-Cost)

2 min Greeting at Entry

  • Stand at the door. Greet 5 children by name with eye contact and salaam. Impact: +20% on-task behavior.

1 min Equity Sticks

  • Names on sticks/stones in a jar. Pull randomly to call on students. Allow partner help — no shaming.

Ongoing “Thank You for Trying” Stem

  • Replace “Galat!” with “Thank you for trying. What made you think that? Who can add?”

🏠 Home Adaptation

  • Greet child by name with eye contact when they return from school.
  • Each person gets a turn at dinner — no interrupting.
  • Respect Chain: add a link for every respectful act.

3.2 Ehsas (احساس) — Empathy, Compassion, Perspective-Taking (INDEPENDENT)

⚠️ Critical Distinction: Bechara vs Ehsas

❌ Bechara (pity): “Poor thing, he cannot.” — From above, lowers expectations.
✅ Ehsas (empathy): “I see you are finding this difficult. That makes sense. How can we help?” — From alongside, preserves Izzat.

🏫 Core Routines — Classroom (Zero-Cost)

30 sec Feeling Check-In

  • Show thumb face (happy/tired/worried/excited). No forced explanation. NEVER grade or force sharing.

2 min (twice/week) Empathic Listening Pair

  • A speaks 30 sec. B listens, then says: “What I hear you saying is… Is that right?” Swap roles.

🏠 Home Adaptation

  • Dinner feeling check-in: each person shares, others reflect.
  • Instead of fixing, listen first: “So I heard you say…”
  • I Feel statements: “I feel [emotion] when [action] because [reason].”

3.3 Tafakkur (تفکر) — The Inquiring Mind

🏫 Core Routines — Classroom (Zero-Cost)

1 min See-Think-Wonder

3 sec Wait Time

  • After asking a question, count 3 seconds before calling on anyone. Impact: +40% participation (especially girls).

🏠 Home Adaptation

  • Wonder Wall on the fridge.
  • Don’t give the answer — ask back: “How could we find out?”

2–5 min Calm Space (Time-In, NOT Punishment)

  • A cozy corner. NEVER used as punishment. Timer for 2 minutes. Choice board: breathing, counting, drawing, water.

🏠 Home Adaptation

  • Belly breathing before homework.
  • Emotion Thermometer on the fridge.
  • Calm Space at home: a corner with a cushion. Time-in, not time-out.

3.5 Ittihad (اتحاد) — Collaborative Action

🏫 Core Routines — Classroom (Zero-Cost)

Daily Structured Group Roles (Rotating)

  • 5 Roles: Facilitator, Time Keeper, Materials Manager, Reporter, Checker. Rotate daily.

30 sec setup Clock Partners

  • Each child has 12 different partners. Quick pairing — no exclusion.

1–2 min Turn and Talk with Accountability

  • Each speaks 30 seconds. Reporter shares the PARTNER’s idea — forces listening.

5–10 min Peace Table — Conflict Resolution

  • Use I Feel statements → Listen → Brainstorm → Agree → Apology of Action (fix, not just words).

🏠 Home Adaptation

  • Family roles rotating: Material Manager, Time Keeper, Reporter.

5.3 Troubleshooting Common Challenges

😄 Children giggle during breathing.
Solution: Normal for 2 days. Continue calmly. Say: “It is okay to giggle. Let us try again.”
👦 Same boys dominate even with equity sticks.
Solution: Use Reporter shares partner idea — boys must listen to their partner. Track tally.
💔 Child uses “bechara” for empathy.
Solution: Gently correct: “That is sympathy from above. Let us try: ‘He is finding it difficult. How can we help?’”
⏰ Parent says “no time.”
Solution: BUNYAAD is not extra — 5 minutes of dinner conversation. Breathing saves time by reducing conflict.
👨‍🏫 Head teacher says “no time.”
Solution: Show evidence: Greeting +20% on-task. Breathing improves attention. Same 40 min, different process.
📉 Parent worries marks will drop.
Solution: OECD 2024: foundation skills improve grades. Frame as method to improve marks.

5.4 PLC & Parent Circle Guide

Teachers PLC — Weekly (30 min): Success Sharing (5 min) · Challenge (10 min) · Planning (10 min) · Commitment (5 min).

Tafakkur — Not Yet: Only recall questions, no wait time. Starting: See-Think-Wonder sometimes. Strong: Wait time consistent, Wonder Wall with genuine questions, “My thinking is… because…”

Qaboo — Not Yet: No regulation, calm space as punishment. Starting: Breathing sometimes. Strong: Daily breathing, thermometer visible, calm space time-in, “I feel… I need… I will…” before escalation.

Ittihad — Not Yet: Unstructured groups, same children dominate. Starting: Roles sometimes. Strong: Clock partners, roles rotate daily, Reporter shares partner idea, Peace Table used independently.

6.4 Growth Conference Guide — Student-Led

Preparation: Student selects portfolio pieces. Completes self-reflection: “I showed Izzat when… Ehsas when…”

Conference (20 min): Welcome Sharing (5 min) · Pillar Reflection (5 min) · Goal Setting (5 min) · Feedback & Appreciation (5 min). No ranking. No grades.

Remember: Progress, not perfection.

Small consistent actions create transformative change.

🔵 One greeting
💚 One “Thank you for trying”
💚 One “What I hear…” (avoid bechara)
🟢 One “What makes you think?”
🟠 One “Let us pause and breathe”
🔴 One “We need your idea too” — reporter shares partner idea

💚 Ehsas as Independent Pillar — Final Reminder
Bechara (pity) says “poor thing” from above — lowers expectations.
Ehsas (empathy) says “I see you finding difficult — that makes sense. How can we help?” — from alongside, preserves Izzat (dignity).
Teach this explicitly. Never grade empathy.
