Chapter 2

Your Role as Parent and Teacher
— Same Team, Same Language, Same Values

2.1 The Power of Modeling — Home and School

Children learn more from what we do than from what we say. If a teacher says Izzat but shames a child, children learn shaming. If a parent says Ehsas but uses bechara (pity), children learn pity — not empathy.

🧱 Three Core Modeling Responsibilities

  • 1. Consistent Language Use: Same stems at home and school:
    • “Thank you for trying.”
    • “What I hear you saying is… Is that right?”
    • “What makes you think?”
    • “Let us pause and breathe.”
    • “We need your idea too.”
  • 2. Visible Skill Demonstration: Show how you pause when angry, how you listen, how you wonder.
  • 3. Authentic Response: Be genuine, not performative. If you are tired, say: “I am feeling tired. I will take a breath.”

Teacher Role: Culture builder in the classroom. Greet by name, use equitable turns, model Qaboo first.
Parent Role: Culture builder at home. Same language at dinner, homework, and conflict. You are the first teacher.
Together: Same values, same words. Consistency means the child feels safe both at home and school.

2.2 Essential Language Shifts — For Home and School

Replace old, harmful language with new BUNYAAD language. Every word shapes the child’s sense of self.

❌ Old Language (Avoid) ✅ New BUNYAAD Language (Use)
“Galat!” / “Sit down.” / “Chup karo.” / “You are slow.” “Thank you for trying. What made you think that? Who can add?” (Izzat + Tafakkur)
“Bechara, poor thing, he cannot.” / “Taras aa raha hai.” “He is finding it difficult. That makes sense. How can we help?”
“What I hear you saying is…” (Ehsas with Izzat)
“Why are you asking silly questions?” “That is an interesting question. What makes you wonder?”
“My thinking is… because…” (Tafakkur)
“Stop crying, be strong.” / “Shame on you.” “It is okay to feel sad. Would you like to breathe together or visit the calm space for 2 minutes?”
“I feel… I need… I will…” (Qaboo + Ehsas)
“Do group work.” (unstructured) “Your turn, my turn. Reporter will share the partner’s idea. We need your idea too.” (Ittihad + Izzat + Ehsas)

Urdu Stems for Home

English Translation
“Thank you for trying, who can add to this?”
“I hear you saying… Did I understand correctly?”
Feel others — this is Ehsas (empathy), not Bechara (pity).”
“What do you think? Why? My thinking is… because…”
“Let us breathe. I feel… I need… I will…”

2.3 Emotion Coaching Framework — For Parents and Teachers

Same framework, home and school. Consistency helps children feel safe and understood everywhere.

1. Recognize & Name

Ehsas + Qaboo

English: “I can see you are feeling sad/angry. Where is your thermometer 1–5?”

Not: “Stop crying.”

2. Validate & Understand

Izzat + Ehsas — Not Pity

English: “It makes sense to feel this way. Not ‘poor thing’ — I hear you finding it difficult.”

Avoid bechara. Replace with empathy with dignity.

3. Support & Problem-Solve

Qaboo + Tafakkur + Ittihad

English: “When this feeling comes, what can we do? Let us think — breath, calm space, ask for help? I feel… I need… I will…”

💡 Home Example: Child Angry About Homework

Old: “Chup karo, karo homework.”
New BUNYAAD: “I see you are feeling frustrated. That makes sense — homework is difficult. Where is your thermometer? 4? Would you like to breathe together or take 2 minutes in the calm space? Then: ‘My thinking is… because… What idea do you have? We need your idea too.’

🏫 School Example: Child Shouts in Class

Old: “Bahar niklo.” (Send them out)
New: “I notice a strong feeling. Let us pause and breathe. Where is your thermometer? Would you like 2 minutes in the calm space as time-in support — not punishment? When you are ready: ‘What I hear you saying is… Is that right?’

2.4 Making Thinking and Feeling Visible — Think-Alouds with Ehsas

When teachers and parents think aloud, children learn how to think, not just what to think. Include Ehsas naturally in every subject.

🔬 Science Think-Aloud

“I’m looking at this plant bending toward the light… Hmm, I wonder why does it bend? How did I form that question? I noticed the direction and what plants need. Also, how do you think the plant feels when it has no water?”
(Tafakkur + Ehsas)

📐 Math Think-Aloud

“Looking at this word problem, I feel a bit stuck — thermometer 3. I will take a breath, then underline the important numbers. My thinking is addition, maybe, because… What do you think?
(Qaboo + Tafakkur + Izzat)

📖 Urdu Story Think-Aloud

“Reading this story about helping a neighbor… I feel touched because… How do you think the character felt? Why? When have you felt similar?
(Ehsas + Tafakkur)

🏠 Daily Life at Home — Sibling Conflict

“I see both of you are feeling angry. Let us pause. What I hear you saying is… Is that right?
(Tafakkur + Ehsas + Qaboo)

🔴 CRITICAL REMINDER — Bechara vs Ehsas:
Bechara (pity) says “Poor thing” from above, lowers expectations, and creates a deficit mindset.
Ehsas (empathy) says “I see you are finding this difficult. That makes sense. How can we help?” — from alongside, preserving Izzat (dignity).
📢 Teach this distinction explicitly — to children and to parents.
