Pillar 4
Qaboo (قابو)
The Regulated Self — Emotional Control & Sabr
🎯 Goals
- Identify and name emotions accurately (not just “happy” or “sad”).
- Use calming strategies independently (breathing, calm space, etc.).
- Learn to pause and choose a response rather than react impulsively.
- Link to Islamic value of Sabr (patience and perseverance).
🧠 Key Distinction
Qaboo is NOT suppression. It is “It is okay to feel angry, and you can learn to hold it and choose what to do.”
Urdu: “Apne jazbaat par qaboo rakhna.”
🏫 Core Routines — Classroom (Zero-Cost)
1 min (3x/day) Belly Breathing
- Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 counts. Hold for 2. Exhale through the mouth for 6 counts.
- Practice 3 times a day: morning, after lunch, before dismissal.
- Adaptation: “Smell the flowers, blow out the candle.” If children giggle, continue calmly — the giggles fade after 2 days.
30 sec Emotion Thermometer 1–5
- 1 — Calm (Green): Peaceful, ready to learn
- 2 — Okay (Blue): Fine, focused
- 3 — Frustrated (Yellow): Something bothering me
- 4 — Upset (Orange): Strong feelings
- 5 — Explosive (Red): Need help to calm down
- Use during morning check-in and before challenging tasks.
2–5 min Calm Space (Time-In, NOT Punishment)
- A cozy corner with a mat, pillow, or just a chair turned slightly away.
- Students may visit voluntarily or be suggested to go. NEVER used as punishment or isolation.
- Timer for 2 minutes. Choice board: breathing, counting backwards, squeeze a stress ball, draw feelings, drink water.
- Adaptation (no space): Child stays at their seat, turns chair slightly, uses a coping card on their desk.
Ongoing “Pause and Choose” — I feel… I need… I will…
- I feel [frustrated].
- I need [to pause].
- I will [take a breath and then ask for help].
- Teacher models this first — children learn by watching the adult regulate.
🏠 Home Adaptation
1. Belly Breathing at Home
Morning, before homework, after conflict, or before bed: “Chalo saath do gehrai saans lete hain” — 1 minute together.
2. Emotion Thermometer on the Fridge
Draw a 1–5 scale. Ask: “Where is your thermometer now?” Followed by: “Which strategy would feel good?” — No shaming.
3. Calm Space at Home
A corner with a cushion. Time-in, not time-out. When feeling 4–5, go for 2 minutes to breathe, then return. Never send a child there as punishment.
4. Calming Strategy Menu for Home
Belly breathing (5 breaths) · Count backwards from 10 · Squeeze a stress ball · Draw how you feel · Drink water · Stretch like a cat · Positive self-talk: “I can handle this.” · 20-second hug (oxytocin release).
📋 Assessment Indicators — Qaboo
- Children verbalize emotions before escalating (“I am at a 4.”).
- Children use strategies before adult intervention (e.g., go to Calm Space on their own).
- Reduced intensity and duration of outbursts.
- Children suggest strategies to peers.
- Self-awareness: children say, “I need a break,” or “I feel frustrated.”
